English Language Development (ELD)

The English Language Development (ELD) program at Alta Loma Middle School provides a variety of strategies to enhance and accelerate the acquisition of the English language for non-native speakers. 

 

Newcomers to the United States with little or no English skills take courses at Alta Loma Middle School for a year or two to acquire the necessary English language skills (i.e., speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing) to become successful in a mainstream program. 

 

Students with basic English skills who require additional support are placed in specialized ELD classes such as Read 180 to enhance vocabulary development and improve reading levels or an ELD language arts class, or an ELD support class in addition to their regular language arts class. 

 

Additionally, an ELD instructional aide provides support for English language learner (ELL) students in language arts, math, science, and social studies classes. 

 

ELD placement is based on the California English Language Development Test (CELDT), scores from the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), prior grades, English fluency, teacher recommendations, and district benchmark test scores.
