Special Education
Academic Instruction
Special needs students have the opportunity to receive academic instruction in language arts, math, social studies, and science through classes taught by an academic instruction specialist.
These classes replace the general education language arts, math, social studies, and science classes and are geared toward meeting the individualized needs of the student in each subject area.
Students may take one or any combination of classes offered as determined by the IEP committee.
A typical academic instruction class schedule consists of two periods of language arts, two periods of math, one period of social studies, one period of science, and one period of general education P.E.
Eighth graders who complete Read 180 also have one elective class.
Academic Support
Special education students have the opportunity to receive academic support in language arts, math, and study skills through a one period class taught by an academic support specialist.
This class, known as a tutorial, takes the place of an elective, science, or social studies class but is in addition to general education language arts and math classes.
Placement is determined by the Individualized Education Program (IEP) committee.
Tutorials meet every other day for 85 minutes.
