6th Grade

Sixth graders at Alta Loma Middle School are taught a curriculum consisting of language arts, math, social studies, science, and physical education.
 
 
Language Arts 6 is based on the California Common Core State Standards. This class covers reading, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary development, speaking, and literature. 
Classes meet daily for 83 minutes daily
Math 6 is based on the California Common Core State Standards. This class covers basic computation skills including arithmetic, decimals, fractions, geometry, and an introduction to algebraic concepts. 
Math Pathways 
1. Students are placed in Core (grade level) Mathematics for the 6th Grade 
The typical math pathway for middle school students is Math 6, Math 7, and Math 8 with algebra in ninth grade. 
2. The advance math pathway is Math 6, Adv. Math 7 and Algebra 8 with geometry in the ninth grade.
Students enter the advanced math pathway through a combination of  CAASPP scores, Math 6 Grade, SSFUSD Math Placement Test, teacher recommendations. If you are interested in knowing more please contact your student's math teacher and or school counselor.

Social Studies 6 is a standards-based course that introduces students to ancient civilizations and geography. 
This exciting course enables students to explore the civilizations of ancient Egypt, China, India, Israel, Greece, and Rome with many opportunities for interdisciplinary projects that combine history, writing, language arts, technology, and art.
Classes meet every other day for 83 minutes.
Science 6 is a standards-based course that introduces students to earth science. Topics of study include the Earth's resources, the Earth's internal structure, reshaping the land, oceanography, weather, and climate. 
Labs, activities, and projects supplement and reinforce the concepts presented.
Also included in the program is a unit on health that includes topics such as substance abuse prevention, family life, self-esteem, protecting one's health, and decision-making skills.
Classes meet every other day for 83 minutes.
