Congressman Kevin Mullin, representatives from the city of South San Francisco, and volunteers from Kaiser Permanente SSF descended on Alta Loma Middle School for a day of service on January 15, 2024, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
They helped beautify the school by painting the blacktop, organizing classrooms, building planter boxes, and planting flowers in the school garden.
Alta Loma Middle School Principal Nina Mendez said she felt proud to be part of such a caring community.
“When the students come onto campus, they see that there’s a community that really cares and is invested in them,” she said.
The event was organized in conjunction with Hands on Bay Area.
“Today I actually have my six-year-old, twin boys out here—trying to teach them the importance of service,” said Congressman Mullin, who was restriping Alta Loma’s outdoor basketball courts.
Mullin represents California’s 15th congressional district, which includes South San Francisco.
His father, Gene Mullin, taught history at South San Francisco High School for 32 years and served three terms in the California State Assembly starting in 2002.
